iPlate's mission was never to make its customers dependent on our products. Cooking will always be an integral part of people's lives, but we all have those days in a week where we crave a little convenience. During the lockdowns we had in 2020 and 2021, many of us had the extra time to prepare meals so we forgot what it was like on those tough days where you come back from work and it was almost impossible to commit yourself to an hour of cooking and cleaning.
The old solution to that was to order in, but we've all come to realise how expensive that has gotten. $30+ for half a serving of Korean fried chicken is no surprise to anyone who's familiar with food delivery prices. Not to mention, sometimes these take a good while to arrive, and when it does - it's often lukewarm. By far, this most negatively impacts the quality of Asian food which often relies on being served fresh out of the pan for the best texture and flavour.
Enter meal kits - the new solution that can save you trips to the grocers and reduce your food preparation time. I tried so many different types during the lockdowns and found that though they can be good value, the cooking times were a bit underestimated, sometimes taking the same or more time than cooking from scratch. The instructions could get unintuitive and just like normal food preparation, it created a bit of a mess for me to clean afterwards. I loved that the recipes were very diverse and some were even Asian inspired but they just didn’t quite have the flavours I grew up enjoying. As an Australian born Asian, I wanted to share authentic, restaurant quality recipes that were easy to plate up across the wide range of Asian cuisines.
